ESHRE Update: Undetectable viral RNA in oocytes from SARS-CoV-2 positive women

‘Viral RNA was undetectable in all 16 oocytes tested from two asymptomatic positive women’ - ESHRE Case Report 2020

It is of genuine concern amongst the ART community that SARS-CoV2 could potentially be transmissible vertically through gametes (eggs) and preimplantation embryos. Data is limited however a recent case study looking at two SARS-CoV2 positive (asymptomatic) women going through egg freezing cycles (donating their eggs) found reassuring evidence that viral RNA was undetectable in all oocytes analysed from the two women.

They found that the viral RNA was undetectable in all 16 oocytes tested from two asymptomatic positive women.

There are limitations to these findings with such a small number of women who were asymptomatic however it is still reassuring.
